NYBEP | Digging Deeper into STEM

18th Mar 2013

Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) is set to be the fastest growing sector with the highest paid careers by 2015 and is highlighted as ‘critical’ by all political parties in relation to future economic growth and success. It is vital that we have young people with the skills and ambitions to fill these jobs and drive our country forward.

NYBEP Ltd and York Potash have teamed up to organise an event for young people aged 14-19.  Taking place during National Science & Engineering Week, it is for young people who want to dig a little deeper and find out why STEM is so important and discover where it can take them in their career.

Who is running the event and why?

It is being run by NYBEP – a leading provider of employability, work experience and careers programmes for schools and colleges (www.nybep.org.uk).  We’ve teamed up York Potash to encourage more young people to consider the value and application of STEM, whatever career pathway they might choose.

The York Potash Project is a proposal to build a new potash mine in the area between Whitby and Scarborough. Potash is the generic term used for minerals containing potassium, which is a vital ingredient in fertiliser. Farmers use it to replace potassium in the soil to maintain good crop yields and strong harvests.

Who is it for?

Young people who are innovative thinkers, problem solvers and who are interested in STEM based futures. It will be particularly useful for students who are able in science, technology, engineering and maths. The event will showcase many career opportunities and demonstrate that STEM futures are exciting, varied and feature across a wide range of industries.

When and where is it?

The event will take place during National Science and Engineering Week at the Whitby Pavilion on 18th March 2013.  It is open to schools and colleges (students aged 14-19) who can register to visit either session:

Morning session: 10:00 – 12:00
Afternoon session: 13:00 – 15:00

What can we expect?

Quite a lot in a short space of time and it’s absolutely FREE!  Students will visit a carousel of activities delivered by local employers and organisations.   This opportunity really should be seen as an investment for those young people it is designed for and there will also be plenty of information for teachers and students to take away.

How do I sign up?

Schools are invited to bring students and pre-registration is essential.  Please register your interest early by contacting Yvonne Emerson at NYBEP on 07765 448830 or email yvonne@nybep.org.uk.  Once you’ve registered, you’ll receive more information.
